Does Islam Permit Wife Beating

“And they (women) have rights (over their husbands as regards living expenses) similar (to those of their husbands) over them (as regards obedience and respect) to what is reasonable, but men have a degree (of responsibility) over them. And Allaah is All-Mighty, All-Wise” [al-Baqarah 2:228]

Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning): “and live with them honourably. If you dislike them, it may be that you dislike a thing and Allaah brings through it a great deal of good” [al-Nisa’ 4:19]

Prophet saws said: said: “The best of you are those who are the best to their wives, and I am the best of you to my wives.” Narrated by al-Tirmidhi, 3895; Ibn Maajah, 1977; classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in Saheeh al-Tirmidhi.

Also, He said, “You never spend anything but you will be rewarded for it, even the morsel of food that you lift to your wife’s mouth.” Narrated by al-Bukhaari, 6352; Muslim, 1628.

Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning): “As to those women on whose part you see ill‑conduct, admonish them (first), (next) refuse to share their beds, (and last) beat/hit them (lightly, if it is useful); but if they return to obedience, seek not against them means (of annoyance). Surely, Allaah is Ever Most High, Most Great” [al-Nisa’ 4:34]

“And take in your hand a bundle of thin grass and strike therewith (yourwife), and break not your oath. Truly! We found him patient. How excellent (a) slave! Verily,he was ever oft-returning in repentance (to Us)! (Sad 38:44)

‘Ata’ said: I said to Ibn ‘Abbaas, what is the kind of hitting that is not harsh? He said, Hitting with a siwaak and the like. [A siwaak is a small stick or twig used for cleaning the teeth – Translator]

Ata’ said: “I asked Ibn Abbas: ‘What is the hitting that is ghayr al-mubarrih?’ He replied: ‘[With] the siwak and the like’.” Narrated by al-Tabari in his Tafsir.

So we need to understand Quran as per the understanding of the companions  of prophet and understanding of ibn Abbas (R.A) who was the companion of prophet and also one of the great scholars of Islam was that the beating was allowed with something equivalent of a handkerchief OR toothpick ie it was just a symbolic gesture.

Now coming to the Those who quote some out of context sentences copy pasted from ANTI ISLAMIC SITES interspersed  with their twisted interpretation:

  1. When you quote from Quran or Hadith present the full hadith/verse not part of it
  2. Don’t mix your explanation / interpretation with the translation (keep it separate)

The above hadith as mentioned on anti-islamic hate site and copied by few people in this discussion:

(Bukhari 72:715) A woman came to Muhammad and begged her to stop her husband from beating her. Her skin was bruised so badly that it is described as being “greener”than the green veil she was wearing. Muhammad did not admonish her husband, but instead ordered her to return to him and submit to his sexual desires.

NOW compare the above with the actual translation of the hadith and the intellectual dishonesty of those people who quote partial hadith and present twisted interpretation of religious scriptures is quite apparent.
